Recent research reveals that the transportation
infrastructure in rural areas of developing countries is generally
geared toward the formal work sector, and specifically men.
Ironically, women carry the majority of the transport burden within
the family. Women are responsible for getting the families' water,
fuel, and food. They also transport the children to school and elderly to
clinics. Frequently, transport services are unaffordable, not
available, or scheduled inappropriately for women. Consequently,
women's productivity and capacity to meet their families' needs are
diminished. Everyone suffers as a result…economically, physically,
and socially.
