After lunch Jeff Morgan of Change A
Life International, Inc. gave spectators a demonstration
and short presentation of “El Burro”, a special version
of BUV originally designed by Earl Minor. The
front wheel and handle bar assembly, which can be
completely detached from the rest of the vehicle,
contains both the engine and drive train and can be
re-attached to different body extensions or used
separately as a generator.
Like last year, judging
responsibilities this year fell upon a talented panel of
engineers each having a particular area of expertise.
The 2002 BUV judging panel included Leon West from the
University of Arkansas (Structural Design), Matthew
Green from the University of Texas (Appropriate
Technology), Ken Kalies from Hoffco-Comet (Powertrain),
Jerry Hornback from Arvin-Meritor (Assembly / Cost),
Scott Young from Rolls-Royce Turbines (Packaging), Dr.
Kenton Fleming (Design / CAD), Dr. Zhang from SPECAR
(Components / Quality) and Dan Kettles from Delphi
Automotive Systems (Serviceability). As in the previous
2001 BUV competition held last May, vehicles were judged
not only on how well they negotiated certain obstacle
courses but also on the level of safety, innovation and
how well each vehicle could handle their intended real
world application.
Many thanks go out to all of the
spectators, volunteers, coordinators and judges that
helped ensure that all of the events and necessities
were organized, accessible and enjoyable to watch. And,
of course, a very special thanks goes out to the
students and private BUV participants whose time and
effort in preparation for this event helped make this
year’s BUV competition a complete success. Their
involvement provided spectators with many inspiring
examples of the possibilities that can be achieved when
ingenuity is motivated by the heart’s desire to help.
