The Second Annual 2002 Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV)
Competition was held on Saturday, May 18, in Zionsville,
IN. Students from IUPUI, Rose Hulman, participants from
private institutions, judges from industry and academia,
volunteers and interested spectators all enjoyed a cool
yet sunny day of
competition, innovation, technology sharing and
fellowship. The Zionsville course, which had been
prepared by several previous days of consistent
rainfall, presented some rather challenging obstacles
for participants and spectators alike. A warm welcome
from driving legend Derek Daly ushered in the opening
ceremonies and challenged the crowd to follow those
dreams that help each of us learn, grow and stretch
ourselves and our talents. Afterwards, an introduction
to the competition was given by the Director of the
Institute for Affordable Transportation, Will Austin.
The
competitive events of the day began with a safety
inspection and a specification check. Afterwards each
vehicle and driver faced a myriad of obstacle courses
which involved an Endurance and Bump Test, Judges
Driving Circuit, Acceleration / Deceleration test, Hill
Climb, Ditch Crossing and the Water Crossing. These
courses were carefully configured to represent the poor
road conditions common throughout the developing world.
